AH399 Special Topics: Sex, Gender & the Body in Ancient and Medieval Art

(3 Credits)

A reading-based seminar, intended for students with a strong art history background. Students will explore issues related to sex and sexuality, gender, and the human body in relation to the production and reception of visual art from Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and Medieval Europe. Class meetings will be centered on discussion of assigned readings; students will write a series of papers based on the readings and give a short in-class presentation; students will learn and practice advanced research skills.

AH499 Special Topics: Themes in Art History

(3 Credits)

Intended for students with a strong art history background; students will meet weekly to discuss assigned readings in terms of art-historical theory, methodology, and historiography, while simultaneously working on an independent research paper.  Students will contribute regularly and substantively to in-class discussions, complete a number of tasks related to their research project, submit a research paper, and present their research.  Topics of readings and discussions may vary depending on instructor. Spring 2017 course: This seminar investigates the diversity of global contemporary art practices through thematic topics such as identity, gender and sexuality, spirituality, time, participation, and language. Course discussion introduces students to important theories and methodologies that will provide them with the necessary tools to analyze ideas and ideologies underlying the world of contemporary art.

AH699.A Special Topics: Identity and Art in the Pre-Modern World: Sex, Gender, and the Body

(3 Credits)

Students in this graduate seminar will explore issues related to sex and sexuality, gender, and the human body in relation to the production and reception of visual art from Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and Medieval Europe. Class meetings will be centered on discussion of assigned readings; students will write a series of papers based on the readings and will consider whether and how these issues relate to their own work.

AH699.B Special Topics: Themes in Contemporary Art

(3 Credits)

Students will examine contemporary art practices through key thematic topics such as identity, gender and sexuality, beauty, science, place, the disabled body, and memory. Course discussion introduces students to aesthetic and theoretical developments that have occurred since the 1980s, examine significant critical debates within the art world, and explore various historical, stylistic and methodological questions raised within the field of contemporary art history.

Introduce students to the fundamentals of theatre and the art of acting as explored through class exercises, imaginative creative assignments, game play, solo performance and scene work.
